During our annual celebration of our graduating peer tutors, seniors Ben Baisinger-Rosen and Beza Dagne were awarded the Susan Lowther Outstanding Peer Tutor Award.
Ben is graduating with a degree in Political Science and will attend Harvard Law School in the fall. Ben was nominated by his fellow peer tutors for his warmth and professionalism: “I am always fascinated by how easy it is for Ben to directly and clearly give feedback without taking over a student’s paper. From start to finish, his sessions always seem to be productive, insightful, and prompt ‘lightbulb moments’ for the students—I tried to take mental notes on how he did this so I could emulate something similar in my sessions, but I can tell this happens over time with experience.”
Beza is graduating with a degree in Global Studies with minors in Legal Studies and Organization and Strategic Management. Beza’s fellow peer tutors nominated her because of her warmth and confidence: “Beza has always brought a sense of warmth and assurance to The Writing Center, and I think her students can really feel that. She tutors with confidence but also understanding, and I’ve overheard her teaching and guiding students as they face challenges and find success during her sessions. When you talk to her about tutoring, you can tell how committed she is to serving the WashU student community. I admire her intelligence as a student, as a tutor, and as a person, and I know that she will continue to be dedicated to helping others in her career after college.”
The Susan Lowther Outstanding Peer Tutor Award is named in honor of Susan Lowther, who retired from The Writing Center in December 2024. Read more about Ms. Lowther and the award here.
