We are very excited to announce that Dr. Kate Harnish has begun a new role as The Writing Center’s Graduate Support Coordinator. This is her third role in our center, having served first as graduate fellow and later as a professional tutor.
Dr. Harnish began tutoring at The Writing Center as a graduate fellow in 2017, serving for two years and paving the way for an important and close partnership between our center and the Department of Art History and Archaeology. As a doctoral student in Art History, she received the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence. After graduating, she worked for a few years at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in the curatorial department, where she supported the writing and editing of a wide range of materials including a peer-reviewed book. She returned to WashU and The Writing Center in 2021 as a Senior Tutor. In addition to her work at The Writing Center, Dr. Harnish also teaches Technical Writing with the Engineering Communication Center.
In her role as Graduate Support Coordinator, Dr. Harnish will take the lead in developing and running programming for graduate students, including workshops, dissertation retreats, and writing groups. However, she will continue to work one-on-one with graduate students because that’s what she likes most about The Writing Center: “I love getting to know the writers and figuring out how to help them find their own way forward. Each writer, each project, each session is different. This means I have to be creative and improvisational, and I find that really exhilarating.”
We are excited to have Kate in this important new position as The Writing Center works to build on our long history of serving graduate students across the university.
