Jo Milner Returns to Writing Center as Brown School Specialist

Jo Milner

The Writing Center is thrilled to welcome Jo Milner back to our team!

Jo will be The Writing Center’s Brown School Specialist, providing dedicated writing and public speaking support to students in the Brown School.

Since first joining the Washington University community in 2009, Jo Milner has been involved in The Writing Center as a peer tutor, graduate tutor, and now as a senior tutor. She holds a BA in Art History & Archaeology from Washington University, where she received the Yale Book Prize for Distinction in Art History and minored in Communication Design and Writing. In 2019, Jo earned her MSW from the Brown School (American Indian & Alaska Native concentration), pursuing practicum work in reproductive and sexual health care and Indigenous food sovereignty.

Jo has extensive experience supporting undergraduate and graduate student writing and public speaking. In addition to having worked in our Writing Center as an undergraduate and graduate student, she has served as a recitation leader for Olin Business School’s Passport Program, a writing instructor for the College Prep Program, a teaching assistant at the Brown School, and writing tutor at STLCC Florissant Valley.  Professionally, she has experience in nonprofit institutional advancement, investor relations in both the public and private sectors, grant writing, and research.

Jo’s return to The Writing Center is the result of a new partnership between our center and the Brown School.  Brown students have exclusive access to appointments with Jo via a Brown School-dedicated appointment calendar in our scheduling system.  Brown School students are welcome to make appointment with any of our staff members via our main schedule as well.

A message from Jo:

Hi!  My name is Jo Milner and I’ll be working with The Writing Center to provide dedicated support to Brown School students in the form of hour-long tutoring appointments. I am a recent graduate of the Brown School (MSW 2019) and have professional experience in the nonprofit sector, research, grant writing and classroom instruction. As a senior tutor at WashU’s Writing Center, I’m looking forward to working closely with Brown School students at all stages of the writing and public speaking processes.

During these online sessions, I’ll collaborate with students on idea and thesis development, organization, sentence-level issues, and more.  This is not an editing service but instead a way to receive one-on-one, personalized feedback on your writing and presentations in real time. If you aren’t familiar with The Writing Center’s style of tutoring, you might be surprised at how conversational it can feel—I’ll take the time to familiarize myself with both you and the assignment, and tailor the session to your specific goals.  I’m excited to work with Brown School students on everything from policy briefs, treatment plans, and research papers to grant applications and personal statements.

To schedule an appointment with Jo or her colleagues in The Writing Center, please visit https://writingcenter.wustl.edu/ and follow the links to their scheduling system.  There, you’ll see an option for the Brown School-dedicated schedule where you can make an appointment with Jo and the main schedule where you can make appointments with any senior tutor or graduate fellow.
