What brought you to The Writing Center?

I spent most of my life dreading any kind of writing assignment, but in the last couple of years I have grown to enjoy writing greatly. I relate to all the writers that come in and thought peer tutoring would be a great way to help people out of the slump I know all too well.

What do you like about working with writers in The Writing Center?

I love getting to know people through their writing and the conversations we have during a session. Writers are often overly self-critical of their work, and it makes me happy to watch the restoration of confidence that occurs in so many sessions. It’s also awesome to see all the different assignments students have across disciplines!

What challenges you most about writing?

I most struggle with editing a first draft. Once I have words down on the page I try to convince myself I already did the hard part, but then struggle to revise my work without another person’s feedback. I usually have to put it away for a day and circle back.

What advice do you have for writers?

Talk through your ideas with people whether in The Writing Center or not. Although writing can feel personal, making sense of your thoughts out loud can be extremely helpful. Start wherever you feel you have the most to say and try not to worry if the first words you write aren’t perfect.
