What brought you to The Writing Center?
I have always had a love for writing, whether it be academic, creative, or both. Since coming to WashU, it has been extremely rewarding to meet so many people who have the same appreciation for the power of the written word. So, when I heard about the work that The Writing Center does to help build those skills and passions, I just had to get involved!
What do you like about working with writers in The Writing Center?
I love getting to see each writer’s unique talents come to life on the page and throughout revisions. There is no one ‘correct’ way to complete a task that involves writing; because of that, I’m always excited to work with someone new. It’s incredible to have the opportunity to read and discuss the works of so many different students at a school that I love!
What challenges you most about writing?
I often feel pressure to sit down and complete a first draft in one sitting. Sometimes when I am really inspired, that works. However, I often remind myself that writing is a process, and it is okay (and necessary) to take breaks, outline, read more, and then come back to the words on the page.
What advice do you have for writers?
Give your writing the credit it deserves! Once you pay your writing (especially drafts) the same level of attention that you would the writing of a well-established scholar, you’ll notice a big difference in how you feel about the work you produce.
